..from the time I click Software-Managment until
Yast is ready with the dialog.

Is this normal (at around 400 KiB/s)?

It used to be MUCH faster than this, is it the
yard-and-a-half long package names or URL's?

The SuSE repository infrastructure is managed pretty badly. According my
experience, they use a completely stupid round robin mechanism, pointing to
servers around the world. I often can see here Russian(!) servers.

Therefore, first thing I always do, is to replace all download.suse.org URLs with
fast "direct" URLs located nearby for each repository.

As long as these servers are reachable and fast, I don't see a problem.

No, it is not a roundrobin.

It is an algorithm that tries to geolocate you and give you mirrors near
to your geographically location, if they exist. This is known to fail
for some people, but you can report it.

And it has been changed recently to a new system that I can not
describe, still early days. So, if you have problems, report them.

That's fine.
