Can someone please check in GRUB for 11.1 what it says for VGA mode.
Mine seams to have been changed. Perhaps after a crash.

I have mine set for: vga=0x314; it is for 800x600 for console mode
for bootup into runlevel 3. The 800x600 is for my convenience for my
bifocals; the default was 1680x1050 & the text was too small.

Thank you. Unfortunately it doesn't work on my machine. The only setting
I got working is "normal", but the I see all the text at startup. As I
remember I saw a openSUSE logo before.

That's more a splash=silent (what you want) as opposed to splash=verbose or
splash=native problem, I think? What does your menu.lst say?

wga was set to 0x317, which I guess was set from install (I didn't
change it) but then I got a message undefined video mode 317 so I
changed it to normal. There seams to be some bug report in similar
directions.

Have you tried the one for your resolution? See tables below. There are
probably more extensive tables available online, too.

Resolution and bit depth VESA Modes:

In decimal numbers:

| 640x480 800x600 1024x768 1280x1024 1600x1280
----+------------------------------------------------

64k | 785 788 791 794 798
16M | 786 789 792 795 799

And in hex numbers:

Try with "vga=ask" at boot and you can try them all. Start with 640x480
which should work on almost all hardware that is out there currently.
Then work your way up.

Have a read at this thread:
http://groups.google.com/group/alt.os.linux.suse/browse_thread/thread/c2ef228fabb0186/195407e05a4773c1?lnk=gst&q=zmdmw52#195407e05a4773c1

Also here:
http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:Setting_up_Unsupported_Graphics_Cards_with_the_Framebuffer_Device_(GRUB)

You would then be able to customize & choose the VGA resolution at
boot.
